Energy Transition
Speeding up the transition to a society, economy and global relations structured around clean and efficient energy systems and manage the inevitable decline of fossil fuels to reach a safe climate for all.
This team supports energy ministries and institutions and other key stakeholders in realising a fast energy transition away from fossil fuels. It operates across the UK, the EU, and internationally.
It can draw on extensive expertise in designing policies for energy system change and what makes them work politically – ranging across energy efficiency, the decarbonisation of heating and cooling, phasing out fossil fuels or building out grids. The team analyses and advises on the diplomatic and geopolitical dimension of the energy transition and how countries can cooperate for a fair, equitable and energy secure transition. Across all of this, its particular skill lies in getting the institutional and regulatory design right, building broad and supportive coalitions or cooperation frameworks for change and mobilising adequate financial and technical support.
Among many other interventions, the team has been supporting the successful conclusion of COP29 to include specific targets around the energy sector, pushed for a strong role for renewables and energy efficiency in the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and built support for continuous funding for the UK’s 2030 net -zero power mission and increased funds for buildings decarbonisation.
