The discussion looked at the road to COP26 in November including the challenges, where we are at currently, key moments to watch out for and the steps that need to be taken for a successful COP.

The discussion highlighted the challenges for COP26 – keeping 1.5C alive – and the barriers being faced, which includes public expectations, far-off future targets, emissions ambitions not being the only benchmark and COP needing to show the path to close them which also addresses adaptation and finance.

Public expectations for climate action at COP26 will be highly driven by climate impacts and new IPCC AR6 science. Unlike in Paris, far-off future targets (2050/60), sector and non-state action (cities, companies, investors etc.) won’t be spinnable as COP26 success. COP26 can’t close all the gaps to the 1.5C so it will need to show the path to close them which also addresses adaptation and finance.

The recorded session was moderated by Deborah Bonetti, UK Correspondent for Il Giorno and Director of the FPA.
