As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, COP26, due to be hosted by the UK and Italy in Glasgow in November will be postponed till 2021.

Story

In Bonn this evening, based on health and safety grounds, the UNFCCC COP Bureau announced it will postpone COP26 into 2021. Climate diplomacy will continue, working towards a new COP26 date and beyond the COP processes. It will take place in the new context of the COVID response and post-COVID recovery.

Nick Mabey, Chief Executive of E3G said:

Moving the timing of COP26 is a responsible decision to protect health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. While we must urgently tackle the health crisis and its social and economic ripple effects, we can’t forget that the clock is still ticking in the race to stop climate change. As the world moves to recover from COVID, building climate cooperation through a rescheduled COP26 will be part of the new global effort needed to limit multiple future global crises.
