The Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) is due to publish its first major consultation in November. Ahead of time, taskforce members discuss what a good transition plan looks like and how it provides an essential framework to support the transition to net zero.

Event summary:

Chandra Gopinanthan spoke about Railpen’s involvement in TPT, especially in engaging with preparers and ensuring the investor’s perspective is well-reflected. He also emphasized critical elements in the transition planning for investors which include; the current emission snapshot, ambition, commitment and target as well as material implications on the business model.

Nicolette Bartlett provided a snapshot of CDP’s role in TPT and highlighted the importance of having transparent and practical steps in transitioning planning – which might involve internal realignment in companies’ business model, governance and accountabilities, among many others.

Tony Rooke describes the strategic convergence in GFANZ and TPT’s work, especially in facilitating GFANZ members to set their net-zero transition plans and subsequently help transform the world transitions towards a low carbon economy. He also explained GFANZ’s role in prioritizing data needs and underscored the importance of data availability and quality to encourage transparency and help drive commitments to action.

Mardi explains ISSB’s aspiration in coming up with a fit-for-purpose climate and sustainability global standards to enable consistency, comparability and linking it with financial information to the market. She sees this as the building blocks to unlock further efficiency in climate reporting information and push high-quality practices across the world.

About the Transition Plan Taskforce

The Transition Plan Taskforce was launched by HM Treasury to develop a gold standard for climate transition plans for financial institutions and companies in the UK.

The TPT’s work will help to drive decarbonisation by ensuring that financial institutions and companies prepare rigorous plans to achieve net zero and support efforts to tackle greenwashing.

The TPT has a two-year mandate, and the FCA will be actively involved and draw on its findings to strengthen disclosure rules. It will bring together leaders from industry, academia and regulators, and will coordinate with international efforts. The Secretariat is being provided by the UK Centre for Greening Finance and Investment (CGFI) and by E3G.
