Join us online on April 8 from 10:00 – 10:45 BST for a critical discussion on our new report on raising standards in the private rented sector.

About the event

Millions of private renters in England and Wales live in cold, damp, and energy-inefficient homes, often facing high energy bills and poor living conditions. While new government standards aim to improve housing quality, enforcement remains a challenge due to underfunding, weak legislation, and data limitations.

Join us for a timely discussion on the future of energy efficiency and housing standards in the private rented sector. This webinar will explore key findings from our latest report, which outlines five policy recommendations to strengthen enforcement and ensure renters feel the benefits of stronger rights and new efficiency standards.

We will hear from representatives of local and national organisations leading the way in raising standards, advocating for better housing rights, and working on the front lines of enforcement, including:

  • Parissa Zand, Research and Policy Manager at Generation Rent
  • Bethan Jones, Rent Smart Wales
  • Joanne Millward, Shropshire County Council
  • Gustavo Barata Leonardo, South East London Community Energy

The discussion will cover:

  • The barriers to enforcing housing standards at the local level
  • The role of councils in improving private rental conditions
  • How the government can support better compliance and implementation

Following an overview of the report, a panel discussion will explore the broader reforms needed to make homes safer, warmer, and more affordable for renters across England and Wales.
