E3G and KAS are hosting a joint forum on Climate, Trade and Development. Join us on Thursday, 7 October from 09:00 – 11:45 EDT.

Livestream:

The international community is faced with the challenge of mitigating climate change to keep global temperature increase within safe limits; and at the same time providing opportunities for development of the Global South, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated the economic challenges in many of the developing countries.

Trade can be an enabler of progress on these two objectives – climate and development – yet can also lead to setbacks if and when trade rules are not offering the right incentives. Experts argue that current trade frameworks are insufficient to accelerate climate action and achieve development opportunities for all.

The KAS – E3G Forum on Climate, Trade and Development aims to break down the silo mentality and foster an integrated understanding of the climate-trade-development nexus.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • James Bacchus, Distinguished University Professor of Global Affairs and Director, Center for Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity, University of Central Florida – keynote address —
  • Joseph S. Shapiro, Associate Professor, Agricultural & Resource Economics and the Department of Economics, UC Berkeley
  • Carolyn Fischer, Senior Fellow with Resources for the Future
  • Susanne Droege, Senior Fellow for International and Security Studies SWP (Germany)
  • Madhura Joshi, Senior Associate, E3G (India)
  • Clara Brandi, Head of Program at German Development Institute (Germany)
  • George T. Frampton, Jr., Distinguished Senior Fellow, Director, Transatlantic Climate Policy Initiative, Global Energy Center, Atlantic Council

In our first panel experts from Germany, the United States and developing countries take stock on what a holistic approach to climate, trade and development might look like. This will allow us to propose a set of benchmarks to measure progress on the nexus of climate, trade and development.

During our second panel experts will look in more detail at specific tools at the intersection of climate, trade and development, notably tools to address carbon leakage. In particular, we will discuss current carbon border taxes, both the European Union’s and the nascent US proposals. Our goal is to assess carbon border adjustments through various lenses, both with a European, a North American and a third country perspective.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is a German political foundation. At home as well as abroad, our civic education programs aim at promoting liberty, peace, and justice. We focus on consolidating democracy, the unification of Europe and the strengthening of transatlantic relations, as well as on development cooperation.

E3G is an independent climate change think tank accelerating the transition to a climate safe world. E3G builds cross-sectoral coalitions to achieve carefully defined outcomes, chosen for their capacity to leverage change. E3G works closely with like-minded partners in government, politics, business, civil society, science, the media, public interest foundations and elsewhere.
