A group of 56 independent organisations and bodies who work across issues related to housing, disability and older people’s welfare, fuel poverty alleviation, climate action and nature restoration are calling on the government to honour their manifesto commitment to invest £13.2bn in the Warm Homes Plan.
In a joint letter to Rt Hon Darren Jones MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, the signatories call on Labour to honour its manifesto pledge to increase funding for home energy efficiency to £13.2 billion this Parliament.
The Warm Homes Plan could help save nearly 3 million households £220 on average off their energy bills. If funding is maintained at the trajectory set out in the 2024 Autumn Budget, then 1.5 million households would lose out on this saving. Many of those affected are likely to be vulnerable, with around half of households who were helped by the most recent government scheme included someone living with a disability, and nearly a third included someone aged 65 or over.
Insulating homes is one of the most productive infrastructure investments the UK can make. The Warm Homes Plan has the potential to deliver economic benefits comparable to other infrastructure programmes, enhancing economic growth by 0.8% within five years and generate jobs across the country.
The undersigned call on the government to prioritise the Warm Homes Plan in the upcoming spending review in June. This is a key opportunity for leadership. By fully funding the Warm Homes Plan, the government can deliver on its manifesto pledge and bring lasting benefits to household across the UK.
