Climate neutrality will safeguard Europe’s prosperity

The European Commission released early today a Strategic Vision for a Climate Neutral Europe. The documents make clear Europe can and should reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Jonathan Gaventa, Director at E3G said:

The Commission’s analysis is clear cut: it is in Europe’s interest to reach climate neutrality by 2050. It brings strong benefits for Europe’s economy, health, industrial competitiveness and climate resilience.

Scientists, businesses, investors, civil society, cities and member states representing half of the EU’s population are already calling for, and are planning to reach, net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

The new EU vision will further catalyze this movement. The climate neutrality goal now needs to become a defining mission for Europe and must be built in to every tool at the EU’s disposal, from financial regulation and the EU budget to trade and foreign policy.
