  • The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol was ratified by the US Senate Wednesday, voting 69-27 on Wednesday. The treaty reduces HFCs, a greenhouse gas thousands of times more powerful than CO2.
  • E3G applauds this long overdue development, recognising the magnitude of the agreement in Congress as a sign of US climate progress, especially given the number of Republican senators voting in favour.

In response, Alexandra Hackbarth, Senior Policy Advisor at independent climate think tank E3G said:

“The U.S. Senate’s ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol shows that Democrats and Republicans can come together and demonstrate U.S. leadership to address climate change while promoting U.S. economic competitiveness and helping American workers.”

In response, Larissa Gross, Research Director, Clean Economy at E3G said:

“The U.S. has joined the party just in time to reap the benefits of implementing the Kigali Amendment, one of the most powerful tools we have to address climate change. The U.S. has recognized – and announced to its partners – the strategic importance of the Kigali Amendment to climate action and innovation. The U.S. is in a strong position – and has rung the bell for more investment – to accelerate the transition to sustainable cooling around the world.”

In response, Alden Meyer, Senior Associate at E3G said:
“With this strong bipartisan vote in the Senate, the U.S. joins 137 other countries working to phase down these climate-warming super pollutants, which can help prevent up to 0.5 degrees Celsius in warming by the end of the century. Coming just after the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act, this action sends another strong signal to the world that the United States is stepping up its efforts to address the climate crisis.”
