Republicans call for action on growing climate risk

For immediate RELEASE

Washington dc, september 17 2015

Republicans in the House of Representatives, led by Representative Chris Gibson, have introduced a resolution acknowledging the risks posed by climate change and calling on Congress to address the crisis.

The resolution highlights the impact that climate change is already having on the environment and human health, as well as the threat these impacts pose to the US economy, vulnerable populations and future generations.

The resolution also quotes the findings of the most recent Quadrennial Defense Review, which states that the effects of a changing climate are “threat multipliers that will aggravate stressors abroad such as poverty, environmental degradation, political instability and social tensions”.

E3G Head of Research Taylor Dimsdale said:

“The Gibson resolution shows that conservatives are slowly but surely re-engaging in the climate debate in a constructive way. It was only a few years ago that bipartisan climate legislation was being introduced in Congress and since then it has only become more clear that climate impacts are a threat to U.S. economic and national security interests. The question now is whether these words will be followed by real action.”
