The White House said yesterday that it would withdraw the United States from 66 international organisations, including critical forums for climate cooperation and scientific collaboration. This decision represents a profound departure from decades of American leadership in addressing shared global challenges. We view this development with deep regret.

For decades, institutions such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other multilateral bodies have delivered tangible benefits, building a shared scientific evidence base, supporting energy security and clean energy deployment, and enabling coordinated action to protect economic competitiveness and manage climate risks responsibly.

Collaboration grounded in mutual respect, shared interests and pragmatic problem-solving remains the strongest foundation for building a more secure and prosperous future for all.

Reacting to the announcement, E3G Founding Director and CEO Nick Mabey said:

“While we are disappointed by this decision, the global commitment to tackling the climate crisis remains strong. The vast majority of countries are committed to these institutions and will continue to work together to deliver ambitious decarbonisation targets, accelerate clean energy investment, and shape the international rules needed to manage the transition. This momentum reflects evolving market realities, technological innovation, and the growing recognition that climate resilience and economic competitiveness are inseparable.”

Kaysie Brown, E3G Associate Director, Climate Policy & Diplomacy, said:

“Those embracing the clean energy transition are positioning themselves to lead the 21st-century economy. Cooperation will therefore continue. Climate change, like many of the world’s most pressing challenges, transcends national borders and demands collective action. Countries, local communities, businesses and citizens around the world understand that working together strengthens, rather than undermines, national interests, security and prosperity.”
