New energy zones: why, what and how?

A number of large demonstration projects, or ‘new energy zones’, designed to test the integrated system-wide delivery of a future energy system present the opportunity to create a market that works for all consumers.

  • Consumer-focus: The switch to a “smart power” system could save consumers £8bn a year,but there is no one-size-fits-all solution. To secure this saving,the Government needs to increase the pace of energy systems innovation at largescale with a number of ‘new energy zones’.
  • New markets and businesses: New energy zones can create new markets and businesses,providing the foundation for rapid growth and new,high-quality jobs in a number of regionsacross the UK.
  • Industrial strategy: The learning and innovation generated by these new energy zones will help drivethe delivery of a modern industrial strategy.
