Alok Sharma has been given the role of COP26 President as a full-time position in the government, giving up his position as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in order to devote all of his time to climate diplomacy and the UN climate talks.

E3G welcomes the appointment of Alok Sharma as full-time president of the COP26 UN climate talks to be held in Glasgow in November. We look forward to seeing the clear plan for how the UK will use the next 9 months to step up climate diplomacy. Whole of government support to Alok Sharma in this role will continue to be key.

Nick Mabey, Chief Executive of E3G, said:

COP26 is the most important global Summit in a decade. With all our futures at stake it is right that the UK has a full-time COP President with a direct line to the Prime Minister.”

Alexandra Scott, E3G Climate Diplomacy Programme Lead, said:

“Addressing the herculean task ahead will require support from the whole of government. Alok Sharma and the Prime Minister should set out a clear plan for how the next 9 months can step up global climate action, persuade big emitters to build back better, and restore trust between rich nations and vulnerable countries most impacted by climate change to forge consensus at COP26.”
