Byford is a Senior Policy Advisor in E3G’s London office. He leads E3G’s work on EU-China climate diplomacy.

Byford works with leading thinkers, NGOs and policymakers in climate, energy, and foreign policy communities to devise strategies that foster engagement between the EU and China on delivering domestic and international climate pledges. He provides comments and analyses on China’s climate policy and politics regularly on a variety of media outlets.

Before joining E3G, Byford led the supply chain sustainability practice at S&P Global, working with corporate and investor clients in Europe, Asia, and North America to assess and report climate risks. Prior to that, Byford was with the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation where he managed a portfolio of philanthropic grants in China and Brazil, with a focus on sustainable urbanisation, air quality and forest restoration.

Byford has also spent three years in Hong Kong as an environmental consultant, working with actors in the manufacturing sector in mainland China and Southeast Asia to develop corporate sustainability policies. 

Byford holds an MSc in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics. Byford also has a B.Soc.Sc in Geography and Resource Management from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
