Video: A challenge for the next UN secretary general – Climate risk reform

Next year the world will have a new United Nations Secretary General. She or he will be tasked with steering the United Nations through a challenging time of growing global risks, not least of all the inevitable rise of climate impacts.

The next UN Secretary General will also be expected to help aid the implementation of the 2015 mandate: the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Agreement.

At present the UN does not have all the tools it needs to deliver on this mandate. And its mission of maintaining peace, rights and security is under threat from climate risks.

Reform is the only option.

The next Secretary General should:

1. Allocate responsibility for managing climate risk in each UN institution

2. Stress test UN institutional objectives against climate risk
