News from Nairobi: Der Tagesspiegel
By Jennifer Morgan
E3G’s Jennifer Morgan has been attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, Kenya.
At the end of the Nairobi Climate Conference a specific call was made to Germany to take up a leadership role on climate change. Achim Steiner, the Director of UNEP, and others have indicated that the German Dual Presidency of the European Union and the G8 in 2007 are top opportunities to ensure that heads of state engage with the issue.
Der Taggespiegel ran a front page article laying down this challenge today, entitled “Deutschland will bei Klimaschutz führen” ["Germany wants to lead with climatic protection"].
The article concludes with its assessment of the progress made by the Nairobi Conference, including a quote from Jennifer Morgan:
Beyond [agreement on a new climate fund] the summit agreed only to agree upon work procedures on the way to a new climatic protection agreement to follow Kyoto after 2012. The urgency of a solution for the climate problem hardly reflects itself in the conference result. Jennifer Morgan of the environment organization E3G said to Der Taggespiegel: “the gap between the urgency of the problem and progress of the negotiations is gigantic.”
Prior to the start of the conference in Nairobi, Jennifer was also quoted in Der Taggespiegel’s preview piece “Oben wird die Luft dünn”, saying “We expect that the industrial nations support Africa with adjustment.”
