E3G works to drive changes in foreign policy, and in security methods, approaches and institutions, to make them capable of managing an increasingly interdependent and resource constrained world.

Managing the tensions of climate change and resource scarcity in an interdependent world will require a fundamental shift in how countries view their vital national interests and the strategies and policies they adopt in achieving them. E3G focuses its efforts on maintaining Europe as a pathfinder for such new approaches and effectively leveraging European influence internationally; particularly with the US and China.

We now seek an outstanding individual to lead our Climate Diplomacy & Security Programme, and build on E3G’s already strong track record.

The successful candidate will lead E3G’s thinking on its future programme of climate diplomacy and security work, and its potential expansion into other areas of related foreign policy. Particular emphasis will be placed on:

Leading our work on delivering a 2°C climate regime;

Reforming diplomatic and security architectures to respond to the implications of climate and resource security;

Shaping the proposed European External Action Service; and

Developing new coalitions of action promoting innovative foreign policy approaches.

About you

You will previously have worked in an environment that challenged you to deliver successfully strategic outcomes and significant change, while leading and inspiring those around you. You will have 10-15 years of high-flying achievement behind you against a background of complex and politically sensitive projects, and you will bring with you the experience and skill to build small, highly effective teams.

Possessing a broad experience of foreign policy and security issues (ideally with an emphasis on conflict prevention, energy security, multilateral security diplomacy and climate change) you will be used to operating internationally and will have built strong personal networks in Europe and the US (China would be an added advantage).

You will have excellent communications and advocacy skills, and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders including high-level contacts in business and government.

Strong written and spoken English and German (assuming a Berlin location) is a prerequisite, and another European language would be an advantage.

The position is initially for a two year period on a renewable annual contract. A competitive remuneration package will be available to the successful candidate, benchmarked against European senior public sector rates.
